There will be another Leica Inverted SP5 training session this Wednesday from 9am to about noon, in Keen Hall room 1007.  Please contact dcarter@ucr.edu to reserve a space.  These workshops are necessary for new users in the core to learn standard operating practices and will be sufficient to cover basic imaging operations including Z-series collection and sequential scanning.

I had a request to clarify the policy in the Microscopy Core regarding gloves.  Gloves are optional and should be used as appropriate to the work in hand, as determined by the supervising PI.

We should all seek to minimize hazards to ourselves and other users, for example by not leaving used tips and broken glass on the work surfaces, and by reporting spills or instrument damage promptly.  But I have no philosophical objection to touching microscope controls with gloved hands.  A dispenser with three sizes of neoprene gloves has been supplied to the Leica SP5 lab (M, L, XL) so that clean replacement gloves are readily available.

If anyone wishes to work with pathogens, they should discuss the work with me beforehand and be aware that this is not a biohazard containment workspace.  By carrying samples in and returning them to the originating lab in a closed system, we have been able to work on low-risk organisms such as malaria and toxoplasma, without endangering other users.

Many thanks,
